How does PLLA work?

PLLA uses lactic acid to signal to cells to turn on repair mechanisms in the skin. The pathways harnessed avoid inflammatory routes and trigger repair of

- type 3 collagen (the type found in healthy skin and not scar tissue)

- regulation of pigmentation processes

- improvement in inflammatory processes

Through a comfortable course of 2 or 3 treatment patients see benefits starting from a few weeks after treatment

These processes are fabulous to achieve;

- tighter and lifted skin

- without any change in volume (this is not a classical HA filler)

- brighter skin with even skintone

- reduced crows feet, smile lines, smokers lines and neck lines

- improvement in inflammatory processes such as rosacea

- improvement in acne scarring

- reduce need for volumising treatment such as dermal fillers

- improvement in results of botulinum toxin treatments

The product is gently introduced into deep skin layers through a quick and very comfortable procedure. This again is unlike the older style PLLA products.

New microsphere technology allows controlled and sustained release of the lactic acid into the skin over 2 years.

Results become visible around 3 months, peaking at 9 months.

What is PLLA good for treating?

Julaine vs Sculptra

Sculptra is the older generation of PLLA agents. They both stimulate collagen but unlike Sculptra, Julaine now offers a comfortable and risk free procedure; no longer relying on aftercare to avoid risk of lasting side effects.

Even though Julaine does use PLLA the unique microsphere technology is what harnesses true healing and production of type 3 collagen. The older generation stimulated predominantly type 1 collagen which is associated with scar tissue, through a more inflammatory mediated process.

FAQ for Julaine & Biostimulators

What is Julaine® of Sweden?

Julaine® is a premium collagen-stimulating injectable developed in Sweden, formulated with poly-D,L-lactic acid (PDLLA). It encourages the skin’s natural regenerative processes, improving texture, elasticity, and firmness over time. Julaine® is ideal for patients who want subtle, natural-looking rejuvenation without immediate volume, making it a safe and long-term approach to healthy ageing.

How does Julaine® work?

Julaine® works by stimulating fibroblasts to produce new collagen, specifically type I collagen, which is the strongest and most stable form in healthy skin. Over several weeks and months, this results in smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin. Because it does not trigger inflammatory reactions, it avoids the irregularities sometimes seen with other biostimulators.

What areas can Julaine® treat?

Julaine® can be used on multiple areas of the face and body, including:

  • Cheeks and mid-face

  • Jawline and lower face

  • Temples

  • Neck and décolletage

  • Certain areas of the body with mild skin laxity

Your practitioner will determine the most suitable areas during a personalised consultation.

How is Julaine® different from Sculptra® and other biostimulators?

Unlike Sculptra®, Julaine® has a very low risk of nodules or lumps because it works gently with the skin, without triggering inflammatory reactions. It stimulates type I collagen rather than type III collagen, producing stronger, more stable, and natural results. This makes Julaine® an excellent choice for patients seeking long-lasting, safe, and smooth skin rejuvenation.

Who is suitable for Julaine® treatment?

Julaine® is suitable for patients experiencing:

  • Early to moderate signs of ageing

  • Loss of skin firmness or elasticity

  • Thinning or crepey skin

  • Those seeking preventative or regenerative skin treatments

A full medical consultation at our Manchester, Stockport, or Cheshire clinic ensures the treatment is tailored to your skin type, lifestyle, and long-term wellness goals.

When will I see results from Julaine®?

Results appear gradually as collagen production increases. Most patients notice improvements in skin texture, firmness, and overall quality within 6–8 weeks, with continued enhancement over several months.

How long do the results last?

Results from Julaine® can last 18–24 months, depending on individual factors such as age, skin condition, metabolism, and lifestyle. Maintenance treatments can be incorporated into a long-term skin health and wellness plan for optimal longevity.

How many treatments will I need?

Typically, patients require a series of two treatments spaced several weeks apart to achieve optimal results. Your practitioner will design a personalised plan to align with your skin goals and overall wellness strategy.

Is Julaine® safe?

Yes. Julaine® is a CE-marked medical device with a strong safety profile. When administered by a trained medical professional, it is considered safe and effective. Our consultations include a full medical review to minimise any risk.

Is the treatment painful?

Discomfort is usually minimal. Julaine® is administered using fine needles or cannulas, and topical numbing can be used to ensure comfort. Most patients report only minor, brief sensations during treatment.

Are there any side effects or downtime?

Mild side effects such as swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site are common and usually resolve within a few days. There is minimal disruption to daily life, and results improve gradually as collagen regenerates.

Can Julaine® be combined with other treatments?

Yes. For optimal results, Julaine® is often combined with:

  • Botox® or anti-wrinkle injections

  • Dermal fillers

  • Skin boosters

  • Energy-based treatments

  • Medical-grade skincare

A holistic, combined approach supports skin quality, facial structure, and long-term wellness.

Will Julaine® affect future surgical procedures?

When used correctly, Julaine® does not prevent or interfere with future surgical procedures, including facelifts. It works gradually to stimulate collagen without creating permanent bulk or scarring, preserving skin integrity. In fact, improving skin texture and firmness with biostimulators can enhance surgical outcomes if procedures are pursued later.

Is a consultation required before Julaine® treatment?

Yes. A full consultation is essential to:

  • Assess skin health and suitability

  • Understand your aesthetic goals

  • Review medical history

  • Create a personalised, holistic treatment plan aligned with long-term skin, wellness, and ageing
